GEMS Gives Back
After affirming the need for a “GEMS community” through this inaugural event, we, the GEMS Gives Back Community Service Initiative, believe that events of this nature are essential to enhancing GEMS students’ educational and social experience.
GEMS Gives Back held its inaugural event on July 13th 2013, participating in the 13th Annual Dragon Boat Race for Literacy in Chicago’s Chinatown. This event, which consisted of 24 teams, generated monetary support for literacy programs across many schools in the Chicago community. We had twenty-four participants in the race who were affiliated with the GEMS program, as well as friends and family. Based on feedback surveys that were received from the participants, there is unanimous excitement in continuing on with future GEMS Gives Back events.
The GEMS Gives Back initiative intends to hold six events during the 2013-2014 academic year as a committee of the GEMS Student Association (GEMSSA). These events will continue to help many of Chicago’s communities while leading to more cohesive interdepartmental relationships.
The goals and objectives of the GEMS Gives Back activities for the 2013-2014 academic year are as follows:
- Initiate dialogue with Chicago’s many not-for-profit organizations.
- Develop opportunities for broader impacts on our community.
- Provide leadership and organizational roles for GEMS students.
- Provide opportunities to interact with faculty and create interdepartmental relationships.
- Foster an environment of enthusiasm and community for the students of GEMS.
