The UI COM Mentors Program aims to expose students to a variety of medical specialties and encourages integration of basic sciences with clinical thinking skills through matching interested students with a resident or fellow from a particular specialty for 1st hand clinical experiences. We believe this experience and exposure early in a student’s medical academic career is invaluable to establishing a path for the remainder of medical school. Students who participated in the program in the past found it to be both a very rewarding experience and a manageable time commitment.

Program objectives:

  1. A group of 2-4 first/second year medical students will spend one session (3-4 hours) with a fellow or resident in clinic.
  2. The fellow/resident and medical students will identify an interesting patient case from the day’s activities and post a brief reflection on the program blackboard site.
  3. Students will write up the case and complete a reflective writing assignment on the case.
  4. The students will research and present a poster on the case during our annual Mentor’s Program poster symposium. Fellow Resident mentors will be asked to attend symposium and add additional comments on the case and their specialty. Posters will be judged by a team of UIC attending physicians.

Introduction to Patient Care (IPC) credit (required component of the Essentials of Clinical Medicine course):

M1 participants can get 1 IPC credit for completing their program activities
M2 participants in alternate site tracks can get up to 4 IPC credits for completing their program activities.

If interested in participating or have questions, please respond to mentorsprogram@gmail.com  M1/M2 students are invited to the program on a first come, first serve basis. Specialty choices will be selected on a first come, first serve, basis. Those who are selected will be asked to attend a brief presentation during orientation week where you will meet the mentors program leadership.

Student testimony “this is an opportunity for both students who know what specialty they want to pursue and who would like to gain early experience and mentorship, as well as for students who would like to explore different specialties to see what fits their interests best”
