On my Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) application, it asked what I would become if I did not become a doctor. I selected that I would become a teacher. Two decades later, I am completely fulfilling this dream as a family physician educator. UIC trained me to be a doctor and has given me abundant opportunity to influence future generations of physicians as a faculty member.

A Chicago native, I have spent most of my life on the north side. During medical school at UIC I knew I wanted to match in a specialty that allowed me to serve women and children and family medicine was the perfect fit for me. After FM residency at Lutheran General Hospital, I worked for several years at an FQHC in a women’s health clinic in northern California. In Oakland I expanded my knowledge of women’s health procedures, including reproductive health, ultrasound and maternity care.

I returned to my UIC roots in 2005 and chose UIC because of the patient diversity and opportunities for professional development. I became part of the residency quickly after joining UIC DFM and have been the Residency Director since 2014 and the Maternity Care Director since 2007. As an Associate Professor of Clinical Family Medicine, I divide my time between direct patient care and residency teaching and administration. Although I love being in clinic with my patients, I believe that Family Medicine is the answer and I am thrilled to be teaching our fantastic UIC residents and students. To me, it is very important that my learners have opportunities to learn the skills they need to provide family medicine to areas of unmet need, whether it be reproductive health, transgender medicine or chronic disease management. Family doctors are the best teachers of family medicine.
In the Residency, I teach in a variety of settings – on Labor & Delivery, at Family Medicine at University Village, and in the residents’ didactics series. From pelvic ultrasound to contraception to practice management to medical improv, I enjoy mentoring the residents and helping them reach their potential. My research is mainly conducted with UIC residents and medical students and focuses on contraception, maternity care and underserved care.

Outside of our department, I serve on several university and hospital committees, mentor many medical students, have a long-term community service project with the Latino Medical Student Association in Pilsen, and am an active member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and Family Medicine Midwest. I am also a member of the AAFP, IAFP and ACOG. In my free time you will often find me talking FM shop with my partner Alex, spending time with our boys, cooking and gardening.
