M4 Clinical Skills Assessment Examination

Passing the M4 Clinical Skills Examination is a requirement for graduation.  This examination assesses procedural skills, lab interpretation, and clinical problem solving using standardized patients.  It is taken in two parts: 1) the procedural skills portion and the 2) standardized patient portion.  Preparation materials can be found on the Clinical Performance Center web site.

There are two half-day portions to the exam and students will be asked to schedule themselves on-line for each portion separately. An e-mail link will be sent to students in June, and dates will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis; students who do not choose testing dates will have dates chosen for them and they will be required to attend.

The tentative dates for the Procedural Skills portion are July 21 through August 1, 2008.
The tentative dates for the Standardized Patient Cases portion are August 6 through September 3, 2008.

There are only two reasons for not taking the exam during this testing period: 1) you have not completed all of your core clerkships by this time, or 2) you will be out of town scheduled for away rotations during the entire testing period.

There will be a limited number of October testing slots made available off-line for students who are unavailable during the above listed dates. Those students should e-mail Veronica Bohanan in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education or call her at (312) 996-9030 to be excused from the original testing period and assigned to one of the October dates.

The cost to take this exam is included in your tuition. However, students who miss their scheduled exam date may be charged the cost of the exam which is approximately $800 per student. Students will not be allowed to graduate without passing both portions of this exam.
