COMMENCEMENT DEADLINES
The College of Medicine has special requirements for students who wish to participate in the various activities associated with the College of Medicine Commencement. Students who wish to participate in these activities must meet a stricter set of deadlines. These Commencement activities include but are not limited to the following activities:
● The College of Medicine Commencement Ceremony
● The Graduation Booklet for the Commencement
● The Graduation Class picture
In order to participate in these activities, the student must have the following on the official record:
● A Pass grade on USMLE Step II Examinations received by the College of Medicine by Thursday, April 30, 2009.
● All M4 experiences scheduled by February 18, 2009. The student must have scheduled all the requirements by this date in order to participate in the Commencement activities.
DATES FOR AWARDING DEGREES
The College of Medicine students who are completing their M4 year should have an understanding of how their degree is awarded and the documents they will need after they graduate. Your degree will be from the University of Illinois. The University only awards degrees on certain dates.
Students who complete the requirements by May 10, 2009 have a degree date in May.
Students who complete the requirements after May 12, 2009 will be awarded their degree in July.
This means that you might have a problem if your residency program requires an official degree before you can start your residency on at the beginning of July. If your residency program requires it, the Office of Student Affairs will write a letter with the College of Medicine, with a seal stating that you have completed graduation requirements but due to the University’s calendar, your degree will not be conferred until the next date that the University awards degrees. That would be the end of July.
● Discretionary Time
M4 students have two weeks of Discretionary Time built into their schedule. We expect that you will need time to review and study for your USMLE Step II. We expect that part of your M4 year will require you to take time to interview for residency programs. We also consider that it is possible that a student might need to interview on a weekend and not have time to get back to their clinical experience responsibilities.
If you look at the rules closely you will see that the College allows the student to take off one day per week. You are required to get the Program Director’s consent in advance. Without previous approval from the Program Director of the experience, you are not attending the experience without a prior approval. If the Program Director has not approved you absence, and reports to us your absence, we will give you an “absent” grade and require you to retake the experience .
Unscheduled periods (i.e., vacation or study time) may be arranged at your discretion. For example, you may use the two week winter holiday break to schedule either vacation time or a senior experience. You may also schedule senior experiences immediately following completion of your M3 core clerkships.
