M4 students may take clinical electives outside of the UIC system. Requests to take experiences at Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical schools require approval of the Program Director at the LCME-Accredited medical school and the approval of the UIC COM Department Head for that clinical area. Students who obtain approval must schedule the elective with the M4 Advisor and register for the experience through UIC Web for Student through the Office of the Registrar. Students who fail to schedule these externships will have no record of the experience on their transcript and will not receive credit from the College towards graduation. You must provide a description of the elective at the outside institution, including its goals, objectives, and the method by which you will be evaluated. For LCME-Accredited medical schools the elective description can usually be photocopied from the school’s catalog. These electives require approval of the UIC COM Department Head.
Procedure for Scheduling Electives at LCME-Accredited Medical Schools
1) Contact the medical school where you want to schedule an elective. (See the AAMC Extramural Elective Compendium at http://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/electives/start.htm.
2) Complete the externship application for that medical school. The M4 Advisor in the Office of Student
Affairs will assist you if necessary. Contact the M4 Advisor for documentation that you need to complete the application, e.g. letter of good standing, malpractice insurance information, immunization documentation, etc.
3) If the LCME-Accredited medical school accepts you for the externship, you must submit the following to the appropriate UIC COM Department Head for review and signature.
A) acceptance letter,
B) photocopy of the elective description, and
C) completed M4 Scheduling Form.
4) Following approval by the UIC COM Department Head, submit your letter of acceptance, a photocopy of the elective description, and the signed M4 Scheduling Form to the M4 Advisor.
5) Register for the elective via UIC Web for Student through the UIC COM Office of the Registrar.
NOTE: Your acceptance at an LCME-Accredited medical school does not guarantee that the UIC College of Medicine will give you credit for the experience. If you fail to submit a signed M4 Scheduling Form to the M4 Advisor prior to the start of the externship, you will NOT receive credit for the elective.
