INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The Sub-Internship in medicine is a four-week supervised inpatient and ambulatory outpatient experience. The continuous four-week experience will expose the medical student to core principles in general Internal Medicine and the development of clinical reasoning in approaches to patient care. A focus on clinical decision making and the use of technology will be covered. Students will act in the role of an intern with supervision by senior residents and Department of Medicine teaching faculty. They are responsible for the work-up, written orders, assessment and plan of at least six new patients per week. They will attend the traditional core lecture series in medicine, morning reports, and daily teaching sessions and participate weekly in an outpatient ambulatory clinic. Students will be supervised to increase proficiency in history-taking, physical examination and communication skills. They will have ample experience in procedures commonly performed by general internists in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Students will learn to work in a team environment with Nursing and other para-medical personnel.
