PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Must be a current M3 student.
PURPOSE: The student rotation in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is designed to develop meaningful patterns of examination of the structures of the head and neck region. Students examine patients in varying age groups and learn to recognize the normal range of anatomic structures. Therefore, pathologic processes in their patients are more easily recognized and can be managed appropriately.
COMPETENCIES: The primary objective is to gain the knowledge and skill in otolaryngology required of the primary care physician. This information is learned and applied in the outpatient setting, inpatient care, and operating room experience. The student should acquire the following competencies related to the ear, nose, pharynx, and nasopharynx, larynx and neck:
• -Perform a thorough head and neck examination;
• -Recognize and manage common abnormalities of the region: inflammations, infections, benign tumors, and deformities relating to all of the above areas;
• -Be familiar with diagnostic procedures necessary for correct diagnosis and treatment plan related to more complex pathology of the above areas, including congenital and acquired hearing loss, head and neck malignancies, trauma, and upper airway obstruction;
• -Understand tuning fork tests, pure tone, and speech audiometry as tests of functional hearing;
• -Identify the signs and symptoms of voice, speech, and language disabilities;
• -Recognize the ENT manifestations of systemic diseases;
• -Understand basic facial plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Clinical care is given at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery outpatient clinics, operating rooms and inpatient wards. Daily didactic sessions are held on a variety of topics pertinent to the specialty and are held at the beginning and end of patient care sessions. Departmental library and teaching models are available for student use.
ASSESSMENT: Student performance is evaluated by department members using the standard College of Medicine Clerkship Evaluation form. Knowledge and skills are rated during patient care situations and throughout the course of students’ didactic discussions with various faculty members.
