PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Completion of Core M3 Clinical Clerkships required. M3 or M4 elective rotation.

PURPOSE:
Students rotating on our service will contribute to and learn from the care of cancer patients. They will participate in daily rounds and conferences, multidisciplinary tumor board, and scrub in to the operating room. A dedicated surgical oncology outpatient clinic will also be attended with the opportunity for the student to work-up new patients and to follow-up on patients they cared for.

COMPETENCIES:
Rotation objectives include:
-  understanding the principles of diagnosis and curative surgical treatment of patients with neoplasia
-  comprehension of multidisciplinary treatment principles for patients with cancer
-  studying the biology and natural history of neoplasia

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:
Students will be involved in the surgery of patients with cancer, including skin/soft tissue, endocrine, breast, GI/colon, and hepatopancreaticobiliary (liver/pancreas) malignancies.  They will follow these patients on daily rounds and in the clinic working directly with an attending. Students will have exposure to intraoperative ultrasound and operative planning using 3D cross-sectional imaging. Opportunity for clinical investigation may be provided, and laboratory experience when requested/appropriate. Instructional methods: Daily morning surgical didactics (1hr), Bedside and teaching rounds, outpatient surgical oncology clinic, multidisciplinary tumor board conference, and student presentations.

Reporting Instructions: Students should contact the program director and student coordinator prior to the beginning of the elective and report to the 4th floor Department of Surgery at 7:00 AM and join the surgical oncology team at morning conference.
