PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship.
To understand clinically significant events in fetal development, in growth disturbance and in physiologic adaptation to stress, and in the development of maternal medical or obstetrical illness.
- Reinforce familiarity with cross sectional anatomy and cardiovascular principles in the fetus and mother – basic science correlation.
- Relate disease processes to genetic, environmental, and sociobehavioral influences.
- Apply these principles to differential diagnosis and management.
- Introduce clinical management dilemmas relating to ethics of maternal-fetal conflict.
The student will rotate through the Antenatal Resource Center and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center inpatient unit. Biophyisical profiles, basic and targeted obstetrical ultrasound, including Doppler techniques for anatomical definition and for blood flow analysis, are performed in five rooms (40 scans/day). Ultrasound guided prenatal diagnostic techniques are performed during 3 half day sessions/ week. Pediatric cardiology and maternal fetal medicine faculty cooperate two days a week to perform Fetal echocardiography. Attending student interaction occurs with every patient interaction.
A broad list of readings will be required, detailing clinical implications of abnormality of fetal development. Responsibilities include progressive and hands-on involvement in scanning the mother and fetus by working directly with faculty as they perform, supervise, and interpret ultrasound. Additional focused reading will be expected relating to specific cases managed during the rotation

1. Participation in clinical conversation that demonstrates understanding of the reading and the ability to apply that understanding in order to craft pertinent questions and to create evidence-based approach to answers.
2. Clinical participation (effort, attendance, initiative, filling role in ultrasound).
3. Quality of the case / anomaly topic presentation, completeness of the pathophysiology worksheets.
Presentations: ONE will be required (usually at an MFM lecture conference on Monday. See format/description on sep page).
Turned in projects: ONE journal article formal annotation and analysis – per template to TURN IN only.
TWO completed ultrasound study guides (anomaly/physiology/teratology)
4. Technical, perceptual, and visual skills (recognition of anatomical views and ability to scan to obtain them).
