PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships, and are in academic good standing.  Usually students who participate received an “Outstanding” in ECM 3-4 as an M2.  Must be approved by the course directors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this elective is to give senior medical students an opportunity to learn the educational tools/skills necessary to become one who helps learners learn, in a setting where they may practice and get feedback.

COMPETENCIES:
•  The ability to give junior students feedback on their group participation, oral presentations, and write-ups;
•  The ability to run a small group (12-14 students) in a manner that maximizes learning;
•  The ability to write formative and summative evaluation of those they have taught.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES:  Students will facilitate small group discussions, provide feedback, evaluate students and serve as mentor.  There are mandatory development sessions on teaching which cover facilitating small groups, giving constructive feedback and evaluating students.

Time Requirements

To receive 4 weeks of elective credit, M4 students must attend 2-3 orientation/training sessions and at least 12 working group sessions, but are strongly encouraged to attend as many other sessions as possible.   Working Group Sessions are on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons from 1:30-3:20pm. The schedule is worked out between the M4 Student and the Faculty Tutor before the course begins.  Students will also spend time approximately 20 hours outside of class reading assigned readings and course materials preparing to lead the sessions as the "faculty" tutor. Students will be available to their group of M2 students on an ad hoc basis to answer questions/give feedback as requested.  Students will complete a formative and summative evaluation form for each student. Specific requirements are subject to change.

You are not automatically excused from rotations for participation in ECM.  Flexibility on days off varies with department/site and is at the discretion of the site director.  Be sure to request any days off for whatever reason well in advance, and be prepared to make up any time missed.

ASSESSMENT: The faculty tutor for the assigned color group will observe and give feedback to participating M4 students.
