PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Consent of Instructor and completion of the M3 Medicine Core Clerkship
PURPOSE: This elective will allow students to increase their knowledge of cardiovascular pathophysiology through involvement in all aspects of clinical cardiology. Participation in daily consult and coronary care rounds will allow exposure to patients with arteriosclerotic, hypertensive, valvular and congenital heart disease. The elective is principally designed as an opportunity for experience in electrocardiography as well as exercise testing. Inter-relationships with nuclear medicine and echocardiography will be stressed. Exposure to basic principles of echocardiography will be offered but the students will not be expected to demonstrate any expertise in echocardiography or treadmill testing.
COMPETENCIES: Students are encouraged to improve their ECG interpretation skills as well as gain understanding of echo, stress testing, and cardiac catherization.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: : Students are expected to improve their electrocardiogram interpretive skills and will work on a 1:1 basis with an attending cardiologist in the heart station for much of their elective time reading electro cardiograms. Feedback is immediate regarding their interpretive accuracy and additional discussions will be held on a daily basis on topics relevant to clinical electrocardiography. Reading recommendations will be given on a case -by-case basis.
