Clinical & Research Interests
Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis: Understanding host factors in the pathogenesis of sepsis  and lung injury and investigating new therapies for treatment

Bronchiectasis: Clinical Study of patients with bronchiectasis at UIC, We are establishing  a special center for Bronchiectasis patients at UIC. We have 300 patients with Bronchiectasis at UIC in Chicago and we are performing a retrospective analysis on these patients including their microscopy and culture results, microbial colonization in their sputum and. We are developing several prospective studies and support group for these patients at UIC.

Pleural Effusions: Identifying markers of infection such as sTREM-1 in the pleural space

Nosocomial Pneumonia and Host Defense: Role of immunomodulation in P.aeruginosa lung infections.

Prostaglandins in Innate Immunity: Role of COX-2 and prostaglandins in innate immune response to infections.

TREM-1 in the pathogenesis of ALI and Sepsis: Mechanisms by which TREM-1 modulates lung inflammation and novel strategies to block the expression of TREM-1 in vivo in animal models. Define the role of sTREM-1 in the diagnosis of pleural effusions and bacterial peritonitis.
