Personal Interests and Accomplishments
Away from the office and lab, Dr. Carley enjoys bicycling, windsurfing, sailing and backpack camping. Happily, these are not all mutually exclusive. After graduate school he spent a summer cycling with his camping gear around Europe. More recently, he has made annual bicycle touring treks in the Midwest, California, Canada, Holland, and Italy. He also launches a Laser and 2 sailboards from the Evanston beach. These outdoor activities also provide opportunities for amateur photography– a childhood interest that is making a comeback for Dr. Carley in "the digital age."
Research
Dr. Carley's research focuses on the neurobiology of sleep and breathing, with long-range goals aimed at understanding the causes and consequences of sleep-disordered breathing (e.g. sleep apnea syndrome) and developing improved diagnostic and therapeutic options for these clinical disorders. He conducts basic animal investigations to identify and characterize the neural networks responsible for modifying the regulation of breathing pattern in differing sleep/wake states. These studies also aim to identify specific derangements of the nervous system that may lead to clinical disorders such as sleep apnea syndrome.
Collaborating with Miodrag Radulovacki, Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine, Dr. Carley has developed an animal model of sleep-disordered breathing and is using this model to test putative drug treatments for sleep apnea. This approach already has led to promising findings in two proof-of-concept studies led by Dr. Carley at UIC. Most recently, these approaches have been licensed to three companies, and larger trials with novel formulations are ongoing. Dr. Carley also studies the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing in human investigations involving healthy control volunteers and patients with sleep apnea syndrome. He also serves as primary mentor for two junior faculty members with career development awards.
