Residents follow patients from initial clinic visit to the operating room and through the post-operative course. Residents work alongside attendings as an integral team member in all clinics.
At the UIC Eye and Ear Infirmary (referred to below as "The Infirmary"), there are two resident services with an attending otolaryngologist in charge of each. Rotations are arranged so that maximum contact occurs between residents and their patients in the clinic, during hospitalization, and in post-hospitalization follow-up. In addition to the general clinic, special clinics are held in otology/neurotology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck oncology, rhinology/allergy, and laryngology.
Over the course of the five year program, residents rotate at five outside institutions and receive exposure to a range of facilities, teaching styles and surgical techniques. Each year is broken into four three-month rotation blocks.
In the first year, interns complete a three-month rotation in ENT as well as month-long rotation in other surgical areas in accordance with the requirements specified by the ACGME's Residency Review Committee for Otolaryngology.
As an R-2, residents complete two three-month rotations at the Infirmary as well as one rotation at Stroger County Hospital and one rotation at the Jesse Brown Veteran's Hospital.
As an R-3, residents complete a six-month rotation at Children's Memorial Hospital under the supervision and guidance of Lauren Holinger, MD. Third year residents also complete a three-month rotation at the Infirmary and a three-month research rotation while also being available for clinical and surgical work at the VA.
As an R-4, residents complete a Plastics Rotation with Drs. Thomas and Toriumi at our Outpatient Surgery Centers on Michigan Avenue and in the suburb of Elmhurst. The R-4 also rotates at Mercy Hospital under the supervision of two private practice ENT physicians: Howard Kotler, MD and Benjamin Gruber, MD. Finally, the R-4 completes a rotation at Stroger County Hospital.
As an R-5 residents serve as chief on each team at the Infirmary (two three-month rotations), at Stroger County Hospital, and at Jesse Brown VA.
