Dr. Roa Qato is the Second Place winner of the Jerome J. Hoffman Award, given by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists in recognition of the Best Postgraduate Paper. Dr. Qato recently presented her paper on Choice of Endometrial Preparation and Essure Placement Success at the November AAGL meeting.

Congratulations to two resident physicians who have recently been recognized for their outstanding dedication to their work.
Dr. Amy Katz (PGY-4) will be honored this week with a Medical Center Class Act Award for being a role model who continuously demonstrates exceptional competence and compassion in the performance of her job. Dr. Katz models UIC's five values: integrity, innovation, service, excellence, safety and accountability.
Dr. Rima Makhiawala (PGY-3) has been honored with an MVP Award at Advocate Christ Hospital for representing the best of their faith-based, values-driven tradition. Specifically, Dr. Makhiawala is being honored for her committment to patient care.

The annual Resident Retreat was held at Whirlyball in Chicago. Morning workshops were followed by whirlyball and lasertag fun.

Current PGY3 resident, Roa Qato, was awarded the Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Award for the third year resident that demonstrates outstanding laparoendoscopic skills. In addition to receiving membership in Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Dr. Qato will also be traveling with Dr. Tracy Irwin, a member of the Generalist faculty, to Bolivia in June as part of the MIMA Foundation. The goal of this trip is to provide needed surgical services to indigent populations with minimal access to health care. Last year, Dr. My-Le To received the award and you can read about her experiences in Bolivia here.

Congratulations to our two chief residents - Meredith Cruz and Alicia Mandujano - who successfully matched into Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Programs for 2009. Dr. Cruz will remain at UIC and Dr. Mandujano will be joining the team at Case Western Metro Health.
