Welcome from our Interim Department Head

Dr. Isabelle Wilkins

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We at the University of Illinois Medical Center are committed to excellence in three intertwined missions: education, research and clinical care. We are lucky to have rich resources to accomplish these including a diverse, urban population of women as our patients, a university with a tradition of a strong educational mission, as well as world-class research facilities, laboratories and investigators.

Our educational programs include student teaching in pre-clinical and clinical years. We have a multitude of fourth-year student electives as well as the usual third-year medical student rotations. Our residents are, of course, our pride and joy. We spend enormous time, resources, and energy on making sure that our residents emerge as happy, well-rounded, and well-prepared Obstetrician Gynecologists. We also offer fellowship programs for post-residency training in Family Planning, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Global Women’s Health.

Our department has a rich research program with basic research in reproductive health including implantation biology, placenta stem cells and endometriosis. We also have active clinical research in a number of areas including contraception, pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, bacterial vaginosis, sexual risk behaviors, maternal hemorrhage, labor, obesity and pregnancy, and linkages between ovarian cancer and infertility.

Like most clinical departments, patient care is the cornerstone of what we do. Our inpatient service and clinics allow us to serve a large and diverse group of Chicago women; we care for socially disadvantaged inner city patients and a large and growing Hispanic population of women. We see patients in a variety of settings - in the newly developed East Campus neighborhood of University Village, off-site in clinics in underserved areas of south Chicago, and in sub-specialty clinics as well as continuity-of-care and midwife clinics. We team with colleagues from other departments as well as the Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing to promote interdisciplinary approaches to patient care. We serve our immediate community but also are referred complex, rare cases of unusual medical conditions. This allows us to provide excellent care for women who come to us with anything from common health concerns to the most high-risk and complex issues.

Three crucial missions: clinical care, education, and research. We believe that we do all of them well. However, our real strength comes from the people who work here. We have a talented and collegial group of faculty, nurses, midwives, residents, and staff – this has the added benefit of making it a pleasure to come to work every day.
