Epilepsy Clinic and Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory

TWO major clinical and diagnostic areas: Epilepsy Clinic and Diagnostic Neurophysiology Laboratory.

Clinics

The Consultation Clinic for Epilepsy was organized at the University of Illinois at Chicago by Dr. Frederic Gibbs in 1947 as the largest such clinic in America. The clinic remains one of the busiest epilepsy clinics in the country, providing care for more than 2000 patients with a broad variety of epilepsy syndromes. We offer comprehensive management for adults with refractory epilepsy and developmental disabilities, provide specialized care for the pregnant woman with epilepsy, evaluate, individualize and implement new pharmacological treatment options, and screen for comorbid conditions such as psychiatric, metabolic and bone disorders. A dedicated team of physicians, nurses and pharmacologists provides comprehensive care to patients and educates them as well as their family and caregivers on many issues related to epilepsy.

Diagnostic Neurophysiology Laboratory

The Diagnostic Neurophysiology Laboratory was opened in 1944 at the University of Illinois by Dr. Gibbs, the American founder of Clinical Electroencephalography (EEG). At present, EEG remains a mainstream of our diagnostic procedures for patients with epilepsy, spells of unknown nature and patients with change in mental status. The laboratory is equipped with new state-of-the-art video EEG machines and provides diagnostic tests including routine EEG, Video-EEG monitoring at bedside, in intensive care units and in the outpatient setting. The Evoked Potential Lab offers recording of auditory, visual, somatosensory and motor evoked responses. These modalities are important diagnostic tools in a broad variety of neurological disorders. Evoked potential, EEG, and EMG monitoring is also performed during many cranial and spinal surgeries (intraoperative monitoring).
