GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY

Welcome!

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is composed of physicians and scientists involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and study of patients with diseases of the liver and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This includes the treatment of, and research into, diseases affecting the esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small and large intestine (colon), and rectum.

Dr. Sean W.P. Koppe

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has recently welcomed Dr. Sean W. P. Koppe as the Director of Hepatology and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Koppe brings his transplant hepatology experience and research associated with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma to UI Health. Dr. Koppe’s clinical practice principally focuses on the care and guidance of those patients in need of liver transplantation, liver transplant evaluation, NAFLD, viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C), autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis.

In addition, he is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and has been recognized with several teaching awards. He brings his varied clinical interests and affection for teaching in effort to extend a warm and knowledgeable hand to the community and the Department of Medicine. Dr. Koppe has a deep interest in community service, having provided care to uninsured patients with hepatitis B in the Chinatown community. He continues to assist the community by providing consults at the UIC South Loop Physicians Group and acting as lead hepatitis C clinician at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.
