DME Awarded Collaborative Training Grant

Ara Tekian, Associate Dean for International Affairs in the College of Medicine and the Director of International Programs in the Department of Medical Education was awarded a collaborative training grant for an MHPE program with King Abdulaziz University (KAU) College of Medicine, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The International Programs at the Department of Medical Education (DME) have prepared leaders in health professions education for the past five decades.  For example, DME offers a program for training short-term fellows, as well as certificate programs for international leaders in medical education at Chicago and on-site in countries worldwide.  Also, its “gold standard” MHPE program has been offered in China, Egypt and Brazil.

Recently,  Dr. Ara Tekian together with Dr. John Norcini, the President and CEO of FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement for International Medical Education and Research), signed a contract for $1.8 million with KAU to form a five-year collaboration in offering a masters degree in health professions education.  The program will be offered in partnership with FAIMER, which will participate in teaching courses and financially manage the contract.  The MHPE degree is offered by KAU, and DME will be the external consultant in designing the MHPE program and offering it for two complete cycles in five years.  During this period, UIC will train a cadre of local faculty to offer the entire program on their own after the five year training period.  A total of 22 out of 46 candidates have been admitted to the program, mostly from medical and dental schools throughout Saudi Arabia, and one from the Ministry of Health.    DME expects to have a significant impact in building health professions education leadership capacity in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

About the Department of Medical Education

Profile Picture of Ilene Harris

Welcome to the Department of Medical Education (DME).  DME is an academic department in the College of Medicine (COM), with missions related to education, scholarship, and service for improving programs in the COM, the UIC Health Sciences campus, and external clients.

Education:  The department is recognized internationally for  offering the continuum of graduate preparation for  Health Professions Education (HPE) leadership and scholarship.  Its long-standing Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) program has been referred to by external evaluators as the "gold standard" of such programs.  DME also offers a doctoral program in HPE, in collaboration with the College of Education at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), and at the other end of the continuum, certificate programs for clinical education program directors, for clinical teachers, and in standardized-patient-based education.  Increasingly, we offer customized international certificate programs.

Scholarship:  Research is a major component of DME’s  activities.  With an interdisciplinary faculty, DME’s scholarship agendas include, among other areas, research in:  clinical reasoning and decision making;  the use of simulation for instruction and assessment; ethics  issues in health care; the history of medicine; research methodologies;  and areas in the foundations of education  – curriculum development and renewal, instruction, assessment, and program evaluation.   A major thrust, in our graduate education programs and in our work with the COM, is to use scholarship to achieve best practices in education leadership activities, and in turn, to use education leadership activities as a venue for generating and contributing to scholarship.

Service:  DME has a number of divisions and programs that provide services for enhancing excellence in the COM, the UIC Health Sciences campus and external clients: the Graham Clinical Performance Center, the College of Medicine Testing Services; Faculty Development Programs; the  Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE), the  Distance Education Office (DEO); Humanities Programs;  and  the Essentials of Clinical Medicine (ECM) course, COM students' introduction to doctoring. All divisions and programs are described in more detail elsewhere on our website

Schwartz Named Journal's Editor-in-Chief

Profile Picture of Alan Schwartz       DME is proud to announce that Alan Schwartz, Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Medical Education, has been named the incoming Editor-in-Chief of Medical Decision Making (MDM), the official journal of the Society for Medical Decision Making. Dr. Schwartz will become Editor-in-Chief in 2013 for a four-year term.

Alan has been on the editorial board of this journal since 1998, and has served as an Associate Editor since 2009. MDM is an internationally-renowned journal in the field of medical decision making, with a five-year impact factor of 2.64. As of 2013, when Alan takes the helm, the journal will move from its current six issue/year schedule to publishing eight issues/year with a total of over 1000 pages/year.

Alan will be MDM's seventh editor-in-chief in its 31-year history. His appointment is a particular celebration for DME, as Arthur Elstein, Professor Emeritus in DME, was MDM's fourth editor from 1995-1999. Please join in congratulating Alan on this new challenge and this recognition of his stature in the field of medical decision making.
