In order to facilitate attainment of our goals in July 2004, we created the DFM Scholarship Interest Group (DFM-SIG). The inception of this group was to explore ideas for revitalizing our research and academic endeavors and make a transition to the broader concept of Scholarship.
Considering the traditional concept of formal research as a subset of scholarship, DFM-SIG has agreed to adopt Boyer's model of scholarship (discovery, integration, application, and teaching) as a framework for all our endeavors.
DFM-SIG Goal:
To promote and support scholarly activity among DFM faculty and residents
DFM-SIG will attempt to attain its goal by:
I. Providing a forum for discussion of ideas for all types of scholarly projects including
- Research projects
- Innovative teaching and learning methods
- Quality improvement projects
- Other? (open to suggestions)
II. Providing expert advice for
- Writing grant proposals
- Developing presentations for scientific meetings
- Preparing manuscripts for publication
- Other? (open to suggestions)
III. Organizing an annual DFM Scholarship Day
Action Plan for DFM-SIG:
- Developing strategies to promote faculty and resident involvement in scholarship in all aspects of our professional work, e.g., clinical, teaching, research. Areas to be addressed include developing an infrastructure, linkages, and training.
- Collaborating with other departments and institutions.
- Developing innovative reward systems for scholarship.
- Broader and better communication of scholarly activities.
- Defining groups of faculty/residents with common interests.
- Arranging a Scholarship Day when faculty currently engaged in scholarly work would have an opportunity to share their work with everyone else in the department.
DFM-SIG is committed to working with faculty and residents; anyone with an idea for a scholarly activity that they would like to discuss should contact Dr. Hasnain to arrange a meeting with DFM-SIG.
