Dr. Aref performs trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage implant surgery for advanced glaucomatous disease, as well as microinvasive glaucoma surgery for patients with mild to moderate disease, using the latest surgical innovations. He specializes in complex cataract surgery and is certified in the use of a femtosecond laser system for laser-assisted cataract extraction. He is researching the use of fish oil capsules in the treatment of dry eye, which is a frequent side-effect of medications used to treat glaucoma. Funding for the research is provided by the American Glaucoma Society. Dr. Aref has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and also is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Aref is board-certified by The American Board of Ophthalmology as well as The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He joined the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2011.
