Dr. Aref performs trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage implant surgery for advanced glaucomatous disease as well microinvasive glaucoma surgery for patients with mild to moderate disease using the latest surgical innovations.  He also specializes in complex cataract surgery and is certified for use of the femtosecond laser system for laser-assisted cataract extraction.  He has research funding from the American Glaucoma Society to study the use fish oil capsules in the treatment of dry eye, which frequently occurs with the use of medications prescribed to lower intraocular pressure in patients being treated for glaucoma.  Dr. Aref has authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and also serves as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals.  

Dr. Aref is board-certified by The American Board of Ophthalmology as well as The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He joined the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 2011.
