Clinical Base

One of the unique aspects of our program is the internship, or Clinical Base, year. Most anesthesiology programs start at the CA-1 level. We offer the option to apply to our program as an intern.

From day one of your internship, you are considered a member of the Department of Anesthesiology and invited to participate in all departmental activities and social functions.

You'll spend time during your internship year in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family or Geriatric Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Pediatrics. This schedule provides you with both the necessary foundation of inpatient care, and an anesthesiology experience that prepares you for the first Clinical Anesthesia (CA-1) year.

But the best part of the internship year - just ask any of our residents - is the anesthesiology rotations. During the first four weeks, you will team up with an attending anesthesiologist and resident, who will guide you through the basics of clinical anesthesia. Depending on your rate of progress - don't worry, we realize that not everyone learns at the same rate - you'll be given increasing clinical responsibilities.

By the end of your early rotations, you will be able to anesthetize an average healthy patient undergoing an uncomplicated procedure.
