Regional Anesthesia Fellow For 2009-2010 Announced

The department is pleased to announce that Dr. Kina Khatri has been selected to be our 2009-2010 Regional Anesthesia fellow. Kina is currently completing her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. She will be the third fellow for the program, following graduate Phil Espaldon, M.D. and current fellow Neda Moaddeli, M.D. The fellowship, the only one of its kind in Illinois, provided over 900 procedures in its first year of existence.
Dr. Rosalie Tassone Joins Staff To Head Pediatrics Division

Rosalie Tassone, M.D., M.P.H., has agreed to join our staff and head the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology. Dr. Tassone is a true UIC success story. She began her residency in surgery here at UIC, and found her real calling after transferring to our anesthesiology program. Rosalie was a chief resident during her CA-3 year, and won the coveted Dripps Award in the department, given annually to the outstanding graduating resident as voted on by the faculty. She subsequently completed a fellowship at the prestigious Children’s Hospital of Boston, one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the U.S., and the primary pediatric teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School. After her fellowship, she joined the Children’s Anesthesia faculty, where she has spent the past five years as a pediatric anesthesiologist. During her stay there, Rosalie developed a highly successful practice, with an emphasis on pediatric pain management, including medical acupuncture. She developed, and has been director of, anesthesiology services at the Jimmy Fund Clinic in the Dana Farber Cancer Institute of Boston since 2005. She also found time to complete her Master of Public Health degree (with concentration on Clinical Effectiveness) last year at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Ramona Nicolau, M.D. Named Director Of Simulation Education

Dr. Ramona Nicolau has been named the Director of Simulation Education for the Department of Anesthesiology. She will be attending the Society for Simulation in Healthcare meeting in Lake Buena Vista, FL on January 10-14, 2009. Dr. Nicolau will create a simulation curriculum, learning objectives, and secure time for the department in the soon-to-be-opened simulation area in the Dr. Allan L. and Mary L. Graham Clinical Performance Center. Congratulations, Ramona!
Dr. Katharina Beckmann Secures Spot In FAER Practice Management Resident Scholar Program

CA-2 resident Katharina Beckmann, M.D. was awarded a spot in the FAER Practice Management Resident Scholar Program, part of the American Society of Anesthesiology’s Conference on Practice Management. The conference is held in January 2009, in Phoenix Arizona. Only 20 residents nationwide are admitted to the program, which teaches senior residents the business and other non-clinical aspects of anesthesiology practice, including:
• Contracts
• Evaluating prospective practices
• Preparing for the first job
• Basic billing and collecting
• Hospital/medical staff organization
• Peer review and medical staff rights
• Participation in organized medicine
• HIPAA, JCAHO and P4P compliances
• Working with non-physician anesthetists
