Dr. Charles Nyman and Dr. Ramona Nicolau Honored At Annual Graduation Gala

The Department’s annual graduation dinner celebration on Friday, June 19th was a smashing success. Kudos to Nancy Burk, MD and the department social committee for arranging another great show at Gibson’s Steakhouse. The highlight of the evening was the two awards bestowed annually to a faculty member and graduating resident, respectively. Ramona Nicolau, MD was named Outstanding Teacher by the residents, and Charles Nyman, MD was named winner of the Dripps Award as outstanding graduating resident.
Dr. Guy Edelman and Julie Golembiewski, PharmD Present At American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Meeting

Two members of our faculty presented this past week at the Summer Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in Rosemont, IL.
Julie Golembiewski, PharmD moderated two educational programs, "Operating Room Pharmacy Essentials" and "Physician and Nursing Perspectives on Operating Room Pharmacy Issues". Guy Edelman, M.D. gave two presentations: "Moderate Sedation" and "Intraoperative Glycemic Control". Despite being the last session of the meeting, the attendance was excellent, as was the initial feedback from the attendees.
Notably, Julie was granted Fellowship status in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 16th. The granting of fellowship status by the ASHP Board of Directors represents the achievement of high standards in practice excellence.
Dr. Patricia Gramling-Babb Awarded Honorary Doctorate During Medical Mission To Mongolia

Faculty members Dr. Patricia Gramling-Babb, Dr. Christopher Chiang, and resident Dr. Katharina Beckmann recently returned from a two week medical mission in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Dr. Babb is the medical director of earthMed: http://www.earthmed.org/ EarthMed’s mission is to improve medical care in developing countries through medical program development, education, direct patient care, diagnostic support, medical device donations, medical supply donations, and community outreach support with the support of medical volunteers. In Mongolia, they worked closely with a surgeon who is both the Minister of Health in Mongolia, and Director of the Institute of Research and Cardiovascular Medicine. This Institute has been active for about fifty years, and had previously awarded only seven physicians an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Institution. On the trip, Dr. John Handy (a cardiothoracic surgeon from Portland, OR) and Dr. Gramling-Babb were made the eighth and ninth physicians to be honored by the Institute with an Honorary Doctorate.
