July 29, 2009
Dr. Douglas Feinstein, Research Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, was recently notified of his appointment as a Research Career Scientist (RCS) by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
The RCS award provides a portion of the recipient's salary and is bestowed only on nationally and internationally-recognized VA researchers with grants from the National Institutes of Health and the VA. The RCS appointment recognizes not only very productive scientists, but also those with a commitment to teaching, mentoring and collaborative research efforts.
The VA's Health Services Research & Development Career Development (HSR&D) program is designed to foster the research career of junior entry and mid-level VA physicians and Ph.D.-trained investigators with special qualifications and interest in health services research and development. The Research Career Scientist Award is designed to provide up to a five-year salary assurance to junior Ph.D. scientists who have demonstrated evidence of sustained productivity in a focused HSR&D area. Awards are renewable indefinitely. The Research Career Scientist must be in receipt of VA Research funding or must have received such funding in the past, followed by other national peer-reviewed research support.
Congratulations Doug!
Gift Will Help Fund James M. Feld, M.D. Professorship In Anesthesiology
July 24, 2009
Marc Puleo, M.D. ’91 remembers Dr. Jim Feld, Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, for both his rigor and good cheer. “When we were rounding in the ICU, we literally would spend 45 minutes to an hour on each patient,” he recalls. “Dr. Feld went over every detail to make sure we clearly understood it.”

At the same time, “he taught with a smile on his face,” Puleo says. “Dr. Feld encouraged both academic and clinical excellence while always focusing on self-improvement.”
The founder of PetMed Express, Inc., an online veterinary pharmacy, Puleo recently made a significant six-figure bequest commitment to the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine that, combined with the generous contributions of other donors, completed the funding for the James m. Feld, M.D., Professorship in Anesthesiology.
“Of all the attending physicians I had the honor of working with during my residency, Dr. Feld stood out to me as being the best clinician,” Puleo says. “He was an important figure in my education, and I felt he should be recognized for all the effort he puts into educating residents.”
A member of the UIC faculty since 1989, Feld was director of the residency program from 1989 to 2000 and helped train more than 400 anesthesiology residents, including Puleo. The recipient of numerous teaching awards, he was the president of the medical staff of the University of Illinois Medical Center from 2006 to 2008 and has been associate medical officer for surgical services since 2004.
“In education, you never know who you’re going to have an influence on, and it’s very gratifying to know I had such an impact on Marc,” Feld says. “To have a professorship named after me is an enormous honor. I hope the physicians who hold the professorship in the future can use it to broaden the horizons of anesthesia.”

The following incidents were recounted in the nominating submission:
Dr. Jaslynn Li with her Caught In The Act Award
"Dr. Li was entering the hospital for work, recognized a patient in cardiac arrest in the hallway, activated the code team and intubated and attempted resuscitation on the patient. All in street clothes and no gloves. Quick thinking."
Dr. Frances Kim with her Caught In The Act Award
"Dr. Kim has always been pleasant and courteous when communicating with nursing and ancillary staff. Her demeanor is positive. She has gone beyond the call of duty for her patients. For example, she stayed post-call one day and assisted nursing staff in taking her critically ill patient to the CT scan for further observation and to ensure the safety of the patient and staff. She is always appreciative with nursing care and complimentary. Thank you Frances!!"
Congratulations!
