Overview

The Section of Nephrology is responsible for an inpatient and consultation service for renal and electrolyte disorders. The hemodialysis and renal transplantation service is the largest in the Chicago area, and there is also a special clinical research program for refractory hypertension.

The two-year fellowship training program concentrates on clinical nephrology and hypertension, with research emphasis on acid-base balance and the pathophysiology of tubular dysfunction. Conferences include a weekly clinical conference, house staff seminars, the Journal Club, a dialysis and transplantation conference, and a renal physiology lecture. Renal radiology and renal biopsy conferences are also held.

Research interests include renal regulation of acid-base balance and renal molecular biology. Experimental techniques include isolation of membranes, membrane transport analysis, and renal clearance measurements.
