
Overview
The Infectious Diseases Fellowship is a joint program between the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Chicago and involves four hospitals, including both University Hospitals, Columbia Michael Reese Hospital, and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center - West Side.
Etiology, epidemiology, and host responses are discussed in joint conferences with faculty members from the University of Chicago and Columbia Michael Reese hospitals, and Cook County Hospital for pediatrics. There are numerous didactic sessions on clinical infectious diseases as well as clinical microbiology.
Research investigations include studies of viral diseases and their control, especially human immunodeficiency virus, fungal infections, the pathogenesis and treatment of bacterial diseases, including Mycobacteria tuberculosis and M. avium, neutrophil abnormalities, hospital and community epidemiological studies, and humoral and cellular host defense mechanisms.
