Geriatric Medicine offers comprehensive assessments of older adults experiencing age-related problems and concerns about memory loss, falls, urinary incontinence, medications, frailty, mood, weakness, arthritis and complex or chronic medical conditions. Geriatricians also provide excellent primary care for otherwise healthy seniors.
- Geriatric Procedures include: The Physical Function Test (For Balance)
Physical function testing for balance can help evaluate postural sway and stratify risk for falls. This test is simple and involves standing on a platform while sensors record postural sway. A report is generated indicating whether the patient is a fall risk and may benefit from Balance Therapy.
Balance Therapy Treatments
Individuals at risk for falls can benefit from gait and balance training. The Physical Function aparatus has several computer – generated programs to help patients reduce postural sway and decrease their risk of falls.
Nystagmygraphy Machine (For Dizziness or Vertigo)
Dizziness & Vertigo Therapy
VRT is an exercise program designed to help patients compensate for loss or imbalance in the vestibular systems and includes balance activities and/or eye movement exercises.. These activities help patient’s maximize their remaining function. Each patients symptoms and needs are different; each program is individually designed to reprogram these specific reflexes
Bladder machine
The Diagnostic Ultrasound BladderScan BVI6100 is a quick, painless, non-invasive test which measures bladder volume in a way that is safe and comfortable for patients. This test preserves patient dignity while allowing your physician to diagnose urinary problems such as prostatitis, overactive bladder, urinary tract infections, and prolapsed bladder in a matter of minutes. It also prevents undiagnosed chronic urinary retention and prevents unnecessary catheterizations.

1-C Nutrition & Wellness Center (312.355.3406)
The Nutrition and Wellness Center offers quality care in a several areas:
Our team of pharmacotherapists is nationally recognized for its expertise in the management and monitoring of patients who receive anticoagulants, such as warfarin, heparin, lowmolecular- weight heparin, and other
antithrombotic agents. UIC pharmacotherapists, in collaboration with referring physicians, focus on maximizing the benefits and reducing adverse effects resulting from antithrombotic therapy.
Bone Health
- Osteoporosis is associated with an increased risk of fractures and morbidity. Early intervention can halt or reverse the process leading to a reduction in fractures. The Nutrition and Wellness Center offers bone-mineral-density (DXA) tests to screen for osteoporosis. Patients at risk for osteoporosis include those over the age of 65, those who use chronic corticosteroids, and individuals with a past history of fractures. In addition, patients with a history of organ transplantation and renal failure should be screened.
- Diabetes
Our American Diabetes Association–certified Diabetes Self-Management and Training program educates patients and their families in the successful self-management of diabetes. DSMT is the process of providing diabetics with the knowledge and skills needed to perform self care on a day-to-day basis. Self-management education teaches patients with diabetes to assess the relationships that exist between nutrition, medications, activity levels, and physical and emotional status. Understanding this delicate balance allows individuals with diabetes to diligently monitor and respond appropriately to daily fluctuations of bloodglucose, thus maintaining some control over the disease process.
Our specialized team of endocrinologists and certified diabetes educators also offer expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, general endocrinology, insulin pump therapy, and continuous glucose monitoring systems.
- Medical Nutrition Therapy
The Medical Center’s registered dietitians provide individual and group counseling for patients with conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, GERD, pregnancy, and obesity. In addition, we offer a comprehensive management program for patients who require nutrition support (enteral and parenteral). Our coordinated care team of physicians, registered dietitians, and pharmacotherapists provide the highest quality of care for all patients requiring nutrition education and management.
Our board-certified rheumatologists treat arthritis, certain autoimmune diseases, and musculoskeletal pain disorders. There are more than 100 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, osteoporosis, and tendonitis. Our physicians work closely with patients to identify the problem and design individualized treatment programs.
The Sleep Disorders Clinic involves the evaluation and diagnosis of a multitude of sleep disorders, ranging from sleep-disordered breathing, sleep-associated arousal disorders, sleep-associated movement disorders, insomnia, and circadian rhythm disorders. The clinic also performs comprehensive follow-up and treatment adherence evaluation for patients with sleep-disordered breathing using downloadable microchip technology. Diagnostic testing is performed in our state-of-the-art sleep laboratory.
Our comprehensive weight-management program uses the latest therapies to help overweight and obese individuals of all ages improve health through sustained weight loss based on reasonable long-term goals. The process begins with a comprehensive medical and nutritional evaluation. If there are no contraindications to weight loss, then all patients are offered both individual and group.

1-E Oncology Center (312.355.1625)
- The UIC Medical Center cancer treatment program offers state-of the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology and drug therapies, and a faculty of world-renowned physicians and scientists for both solid tumor cancers (Oncology) as well as cancers of the blood (Hematology).
- Our comprehensive outpatient cancer treatment services are provided at the Oncology Center, which is located in the north tower of the UIC Outpatient Care Center. We believe in the concept of “total” cancer care for the patient and family. All three forms of cancer treatment are managed in this location (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy) while also providing other essential services such as a pharmacy and laboratory in the same location for the convenience of the patient. In addition, we ensure that patients have access to adequate nutritional, emotional, social support services that are necessary for people who face a diagnosis of cancer. If inpatient services are needed such as surgery or stabilization of a medical condition there is a smooth transition between in and out patient care to make the patient’s treatment experience as pleasant as possible.
