Residency Program Learning Experience:

Strong didactics are integrated into the training program throughout all three years of residency. Attendings from all subspecialties give morning lectures in ophthalmology and basic science to all residents and medical students. Chief residents hold morning report for first year residents three times a week. In addition to lectures, we have weekly Grand Rounds on Wednesday afternoons. Residents present interesting cases during Grand Rounds and outside speakers are invited quarterly. After Grand Rounds we have cornea rounds with Dr. Azar, dean of the college of medicine and Dr. Rosenblatt, our department head. Here we discuss interesting cornea and refractive surgery cases. The Chicago Curriculum of Ophthalmology (CCO) has Saturday morning lectures from September to March, in which all Chicago residents are exposed to the top local ophthalmologists.  Our residents have the unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge while attending a week-long course called Illinois Eye Review in February and multiple subspecialty CME courses throughout the year.

The Infirmary houses our state of the art wetlab that is available for the residents to use at all times. The Department holds cataract, glaucoma, strabismus, and oculoplastics wetlabs throughout the year for our residents (further detailed on our Surgical Experiences page). A comprehensive surgical curriculum is currently under development. In addition, our residents have the opportunity to attend wetlabs held by Rush, Loyola, and Northwestern throughout the year.

Our residents attend many conferences and meetings held in Chicago including those held by the Chicago Ophthalmological Society (COS) and Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (ISEPS). The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) holds their annual meeting in Chicago every other year, allowing Chicago residents to attend the AAO meeting at least once during their residency. Residents are also given academic time and financial resources to present at conferences. Most of our residents present at ARVO and AAO.
