General Cardiology Fellowship Program

We are pleased that you are considering our fellowship program. The University of Illinois Chicago has been caring for the people of Illinois since 1859. Our hospital, seven health sciences colleges, and research ventures together comprise the UI Health system.

Chicago is a city with some of the best healthcare in the world. Unfortunately, there are communities right outside our door where people aren’t getting the care they need. National health care disparities and their causes have been extensively documented, and addressing them is a critical mission for the University of Illinois College of Medicine and UI Health. Through patient care, education of new medical professionals, research into diseases and conditions that affect specific populations, and elevating our presence in local communities, we provide access to high quality, personalized health care to those who need it most.

In alignment with the College and health system’s mission, the UIC Division of Cardiology is committed to providing the finest training to the next generation of cardiovascular specialists. The clinical goals of the program are directed by distinguished faculty members whose expertise place them at the forefront of contemporary cardiology. Our strong commitments to education and research are supported by the only public research university in the city, a free-standing university hospital, and the largest medical school system in the country. The UIC schools of pharmacy and public health are also nationally ranked, and faculty routinely work with fellows in clinical settings and during scholarly projects.

In addition to training at the University of Illinois Chicago, our fellows have the unique opportunity to also participate in the care of patients at the Jesse Brown VA hospital, located together on the same medical campus. Overall, the program’s faculty to fellow ratio and flat organizational structure allow for a large degree of fellow autonomy. Teams work together via direct participation in all varieties of patient management and procedural learning.

Our commitment to education is reflected in the training provided to our fellows, residents, and students. Our fellows benefit from a rich didactic program and from a wide variety of clinical experiences. Our faculty believe strongly in mentorship, working closely with fellows in all facets of their training. We emphasize scholarship, as clinical and basic research opportunities are integral to the fellowship educational process. All fellows have a flexible number of months of protected research time to complete their ACGME-required scholarly project.

This is an exciting time to be a part of the growing UI Health system. We have great confidence that the supportive environment provided by the University, College, Department of Medicine, and Division of Cardiology will allow you to fulfill your goals and excel as a future leader in any healthcare environment. We are happy you are considering joining us!
