Geriatric Fellowship
The Division of Academic Internal Medicine & Geriatrics oversees a highly collaborative program in geriatric education, gerontological research, and clinical services for the elderly.

UIC geriatrics fellowship prides itself in providing a very comprehensive geriatric training program. Fellows rotate through a variety of settings that allows exposure to both a very diverse patient population as well as undergo an all-encompassing training within geriatrics. Clinical services span the continuum of care in geriatric consultations and primary care at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and various long term care facilities throughout the Chicagoland area. About one third of graduates eventually become geriatric clinician-educators. If interested, UIC also offers research opportunities as second-year fellowships through its structured CLASS and PREMIER fellowships.

Goals 1-4
- Provide medical and inter-disciplinary education on normal aging, geriatric syndromes, chronic disease, and evidenced – based senior healthcare.
- Understand how to manage our older adults with socio-economic challenges and cultural differences living within underserved communities
- Develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to perform comprehensive geriatric assessment and management of older adults across the continuum of healthcare and in resource-limited settings
- Provide effective Geriatric Consultation that encompasses all aspects of patients’ healthcare
Goals 5-9
- Promote wellness and functional independence in older adults of various backgrounds
- Address goals of care in a culturally appropriate manner and help with Advance Care Planning
- Work with very diverse staff members in an interdisciplinary manner from various fields of physical/occupational therapy, nursing, social work, pharmacy, and medical specialties
- Create future leaders in Geriatric Medicine that will serve our underserved communities
- Foster interest in geriatric research to better address concerns of underrepresented populations

Requirements
Division of Academic Internal Medicine and Geriatrics is seeking Geriatric Fellowship applicants for the 2024-2025 academic year who have successfully completed an ACGME or an ACGME-I accredited Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Residency Program.
If you attended an international program, you can find out if your residency program qualifies by visiting the ACGME website. We accept J1 Visas.
