Emergency Medicine Career Electives

Our EM career elective is for students who plan to apply for EM residency. The career electives are available at each site in our four-hospital consortium.

Rotation block Heading link

Medical students are assigned to rotate at a single hospital site for a four-week block, with five students assigned to each site during a single block; scheduling is done centrally through UIC. Please let us know if the dates you have available do not match our rotation dates, we will try to make an exception on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Students who attend International Medical Schools are not eligible for this elective.

Medical student education sessions Heading link

While students can only rotate at one site, they can tour our other hospital site Emergency Departments during our educational conferences. The current senior residents lead these tours.

In addition to our weekly conferences, students have the opportunity to attend educational sessions devoted only to medical students. These specialized lectures/interactive sessions will occur after conference; during the rotation month, the sessions will include EKGs, Ultrasound, and Airway Management (with procedures).

All SIM Lab sessions are held at: Mile Square Health Center Simulation and Integrative Learning Institute (SAIL) 1220 S. Wood St. (5th Floor).

Residency interviews Heading link

Students that rotate with us within the first four blocks of the year can interview for our Emergency Medicine Residency Program. We interview once every four weeks after the weekly conferences.

Please note that if you would like to interview for the dual Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency, that is a separate application and interview process.

We host monthly resident gatherings. These get-togethers present the opportunity to get to know our residents and attendings (besides the ones you are working with) and our residency leadership team. During the first four blocks, these serve as the residency dinner, and we highly encourage you to join us.
