Department of Dermatology

“The Department of Dermatology at UIC is proud of being one of the earliest established departments in the country that has diligently served patients suffering from wide variety of skin diseases in the greater Chicagoland area, for more than 110 years.”

Our program has long academic history and has maintained over the years strong commitment on patient care, education and innovation.

Several prominent leaders in our department have major roles in the medical field. Our first Chair Dr. William Pusey, was President of the AMA. The department’s second head, Dr. Francis Senear, discovered a novel disease called, “Pemphigus erythematosus”.

Our highly skilled physicians provide dermatology services at the UIC Medical Center Outpatient Clinic for general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact allergy testing and treatment, hair and nail disease, rheumatologic disease diagnosis and management, autoimmune blistering diseases,, cutaneous lymphomas, leprosy, pigmented lesion screening, monitoring and mapping, Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery, procedural and cosmetic surgery, cutaneous laser surgery, phototherapy and photodynamic therapy, and dermatopathology and immunopathology. The faculty members in our department also serve veteran patients at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (formerly North Chicago VA Medical Center) in North Chicago. Our team has established close collaborations with medical and surgical disciplines at the Institution, providing state of the art patient care. Apart from the strong clinical service, our Department has led expert research in basic science in the field of immunology, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and autoimmune blistering entities.

We are committed to train the next generation of dermatologists. We are privileged to have a strong and dynamic residency program of total 12 residents. All of our graduates are board certified by the ABD (with first attempt) and have very successfully pursued their careers in academics as well as private practice areas, continuing the department’s strong leadership tradition in patient service, education and research.
