PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Successful completion of the Internal Medicine Core Clerkship.
PURPOSE: The student will improve skills in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disease and in the interpretation of pulmonary function tests.
COMPETENCIES:
INSTRUCTIONAL including interpretation of chest x-rays, fiberoptic bronchoscopy
FEATURES: Students will participate in inpatient pulmonary consultation, management of mechanical ventilation, and diagnostic techniques and thoracentesis. Outpatient Pulmonary Medicine Clinic will meet twice a week. A brief didactic seminar on a pulmonary topic of interest will be completed. The stud ent will be supervised by at least 3 pulmonary physicians and will see approximately 8-10 patients weekly.
SUGGESTED TEXT: General Medicine Textbooks (Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, etc.)
ASSESSMENT: Students will receive feedback during this elective one-on-one every two weeks, as well as formal evaluation at the end of the rotation. Information for the final evaluation will be based on the information requested by the student’s school evaluation sheet.
