PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine and Surgery.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the clerkship is to develop in the student a solid background in General Radiology and other imaging procedures. Emphasis is placed on the appropriate application and usefulness of imaging procedures in specific clinical settings, their limitations and risks, and their relative value in particular clinical disorders. In addition, the students are apprised of the facts and fallacies on the issue of radiation exposure and hazard, a subject fraught with controversy and misinformation to the average student.
COMPETENCIES: The aim at the completion of the clerkship is for the student to have a basic understanding of the role of Radiology in quality, cost effective patient care, and gain insight into the imaging work-up of many clinical problems.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: : The students work directly and closely with residents in the Diagnostic Radiology program, with overall supervision by one of the faculty members. Emphasis throughout the clerkship is on image interpretation. In addition, the student becomes involved with fluoroscopic procedures, angiographic and interventional studies, and other imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. The student is required to attend the daily departmental conference, as well as routine departmental lectures given once or twice weekly. Throughout the clerkship the student has access to the American College of Radiology Learning File, both in film and laser disc format and has ready access to the departmental library. At the end of the Clerkship, the student is expected to present a half hour talk to the department on a topic of interest in Radiology accompanied by appropriate images.
