PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.
PURPOSE: This elective will provide experience in general pulmonary medicine. The student will have hospital and office exposure to many pulmonary illnesses along with ventilator care, laboratory diagnostics modalities which include PFT's, bronchoscopies and thoracenteses, exercise cardiopulmonary testing, Asthma Learning Center (patient asthma education) and Second Wind (patient COPD education) and a specific Respiratory Care educational offering.The hospital is a JCAHO certified Disease Specific Management facility for Asthma.
COMPETENCIES: The student will be able to easily understand PFT's and interpret them, alon with understanding the basics of pulmonary physiology, indications and contraindications to various pulmonary techniques.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The student will be involved in direct patient care, seeing new consults, making daily rounds on current patients, seeing brochoscopies, thoracenteses, and pulmonary function testing. They will round with one of 2 pulmonologists, be asked to make short (5 -10 minute)presentations on various pulmonary topics, interpret pulmonary functions. There will be 4 specific didactic presentations.
ASSESSMENT: The 2 pulmonologists will evaluate the students capabilities and performance, engagement and motivation, and medical knowledge and professionalism. This data will be sent to the appropriate Medical School representative.
