Primary Care Medicine - AIMMC

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the M3 Core Clerkship in Medicine.

PURPOSE: This clerkship is designed to expose you to primary care internal medicine, which is often times VERY different from the practice of inpatient medicine.

COMPETENCIES: The goals of the clerkship include:
•  To learn to diagnosis and care for acute and chronic medical problems in an ambulatory setting;
•  To become familiar with screening guidelines based on a patient’s age and gender;
•  To begin to implement primary prevention during most patient encounters;
•  To become familiar with the policies and protocols of managed care;
•  To be able to perform a MEDLINE search efficiently and apply the information to your practice; and
•  To experience the rewards and satisfactions of the practice of internal medicine.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The objectives are met through direct patient encounters, through participation in case-based lectures, and through a mentorship with primary care internists.
