GERIATRIC MEDICINE
PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed the Junior Medicine Core Clerkship
PURPOSE: Expertise in the medical problems of older patients is essential for all primary care physicians who care for adults. This elective serves as an introduction to basic principles of geriatrics with special emphasis on: outpatient evaluation and management of memory loss and dementia; providing medical care to patients in long-term care, including assisted living, intermediate and skilled care; community-based care including home health, adult day care and hospice; psychiatric issues in the
elderly, including depression, anxiety and delirium; and health promotion and disease prevention in ambulatory care.
COMPETENCIES: Course meets core competencies for internal medicine.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: Instruction methods include inpatient and outpatient direct patient care, small group interactive seminars and lectures. Students will see patients at the following sites: ALGH inpatient, rehab, geropsych unit; outpatient geriatrics clinic, home care, and hospice . Students will see at least three patients/day and then present to the attendings. Students will see approximately 4 inpatients/day, 6 outpatients/day. Typically, patient problems include dementia, delirium,
depression, gait disorders, and urinary incontinence.
ASSESSMENT: Review of observed patient care, presentation of patient cases and short topic presentation of faculty.
