PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Students must have completed all M3 Core Clerkships.
PURPOSE: The goal of the elective is for students to develop cognitive skills and competency to evaluate patients with gastrointestinal diseases.
COMPETENCIES: The objectives of this elective are:
• To improve each student’s skills in carrying out an accurate and properly focused history and physical in-patients with complaints referable to the gastrointestinal system;
• To make the student familiar with the clinical, chemical, and pathological features of common gastrointestinal disorders, e.g., viral/toxic hepatitis, cholecystitis, peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory and ischemic bowel disease, carcinoma of the colon, etc.
• To make the student familiar with the modalities available for the diagnosis and treatment of common gastrointestinal disorders;
• To enable the student to formulate a problem list and a diagnostic and therapeutic plan for patients with common gastrointestinal complaints.
• To give the student a better grasp of normal gastrointestinal physiology and the ways in which both disease processes and therapy alter that physiology.
INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: : Live “in action” endoscopy will be viewed and correlated with patient’s symptoms, radiology findings, and lab tests. Dynamic discussions will help integrate the significance of the pathology seen, and illuminate a clear understanding of GI disease and management. The student can expect to walk away with an incredible knowledge and understanding of gastrointestinal disease.
ASSESSMENT: Students are evaluated by their teaching attending, who observes their performance in the outpatient setting, at the bedside, and in rounds. Attendings use the College of Medicine Clerkship Evaluation form, which evaluates the students in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills, professional behavior, and humanistic qualities. Attendings discuss their evaluation with the student at the end of the rotation.
