Cardiology - UICMC/JBVA

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Completion of all M3 Core Clerkships.

PURPOSE: The cardiology elective will provide the student with an outstanding experience in clinical consultative cardiology. The student will also develop and refine the necessary cardiovascular examination skills requisite in becoming an outstanding physician.

COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of the Cardiology Elective students will be able to do the following:
•  Perform a good cardiovascular examination;
•  Understand cardiac anatomy and physiology and how it applies to the clinical setting;
•  Assess patients with the following cardiovascular conditions: a) Coronary artery disease- angina, unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction; b) Lipid disorders; c) Heart failure; d) Valvular heart disease; e) Cardiac arrhythmia.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The student will read electrocardiograms daily, see inpatient consultations prior to the Fellow and Attending, and participate in cardiology lectures and conferences. Students will spend two half days per week in the Cardiovascular Training Center. The cardiovascular physical examination skills will be taught at the bedside and in the Cardiovascular Teaching Center using the Harvey Patient Simulator, Computer Assisted Instruction, and the Heart Sound Simulator. Additionally, the student will gain experience in each of the following areas:
•  Non-invasive testing including: echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal), exercise/dobutamine echocardiography, exercise stress testing, nuclear cardiology, and ultrafast CT scanning;
•  Invasive cardiology procedures including cardiac catheterization, coronary angioplasty, coronary atherectomy, percutaneous rotablator therapy, coronary stenting, and intracoronary ultrasound;
•  Cardiac electrophysiology, including indications, diagnostic electrophysiology studies, ablative techniques, and pacemaker placement. .
   
ASSESSMENT: The student's performance will be assessed in the following manner: history and physical exam presentation, bedside evaluation, successful completion of cardiovascular teaching center requirements. The cardiology-attending physician will evaluate students at the end of the rotation.
