Ambulatory Medicine - ALGH

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: No Prerequisites.

PURPOSE: Students will learn principles of Ambulatory Medicine while seeing patients in a busy general Internal Medicine Clinic at the Nesset Pavilion. Morning inpatient rounds are followed by outpatient visits averaging 30-40 per week. Students will see new and established patients. Students have primary responsibility for evaluating the patient, formulating and assessment and implementing management under the close supervision of an attending internist. Daily mid-day general medicine and sub-specialty conferences provide didactic instruction. A broad perspective on ambulatory medicine is obtained by visiting a nursing home, geriatric day care center, and the office of an occupational medicine physician.

COMPETENCIES:

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The primary teaching method will be allowing the student to work hands on with patients in a variety of settings. The student will initially work with the patient one-on-one and then immediately after the student will have the opportunity to again interact with the patient in the presence of the supervising attending physician. Additional discussion between students and attending will occur privately. The attending physician will be present whenever patient contact takes place, including during field trips to nursing homes and other sites.
SUGGESTED TEXT: Barker: Ambulatory Medicine

ASSESSMENT: Students will meet one-on-one with the supervising attending physician at the midpoint and end of the elective to receive feedback. In addition, a written feedback form will be completed and discussed with the student at the end of the elective.
