Clinical Toxicology - UICMC/CCH

PREREQUISITES AND PLACEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM: Open to all 4th year medical students who have successfully completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

PURPOSE: The main objective of this elective is to introduce the senior medical student to the specialty of clinical toxicology.

COMPETENCIES: By the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
•  Discuss the differential diagnosis of the poisoned patient;
•  Discuss and implement general toxicology management to the overdosed patient;
• Discuss the more common poisonings encountered by the primary care physician; and
•  Respond and manage basic poison control center telephone calls.
•  Diagnose and respond to potential biological, chemical and radiological acts of terrorism.

INSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES: The 4 week rotation in Clinical Toxicology will be orchestrated by the Toxikon Consortium which includes: The University of Illinois Program in Emergency Medicine, the Section of Toxicology at Cook County Hospital, and the Illinois Poison Control Center. The student will be expected to attend and participate in lectures and conferences given by the toxicology Fellows and attending physicians boarded in medical toxicology. These will include: student lectures in basic toxicology; a core lecture series describing the most commonly encountered poisons; a weekly toxicology conference discussing the interesting cases of the week; and a journal club. Additionally, the student will participate in clinical/ward rounds on inpatients as well as respond to routine poison calls at the Illinois Poison Control Center in downtown Chicago. The student will discuss and assist in managing approximately 25 patients per week.
   
ASSESSMENT: 50% of the grade is based on clinical performance as evaluated by the Clinical Toxicology faculty, 25% on conference participation, and 25% on the final examination.
