Welcome to the Department of Medical Education (DME). DME is an academic department in the College of Medicine (COM), with missions related to education, scholarship, and service for improving programs in the COM, the UIC Health Sciences campus, and external clients.
|Education: The department is recognized internationally for offering the continuum of graduate preparation for Health Professions Education (HPE) leadership and scholarship. Its long-standing Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) program has been referred to by external evaluators as the "gold standard" of such programs. DME also offers a doctoral program in HPE, in collaboration with the College of Education at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), and at the other end of the continuum, certificate programs for clinical education program directors, for clinical teachers, and in standardized-patient-based education. Increasingly, we offer customized international certificate programs.
Scholarship: Research is a major component of DME’s activities. With an interdisciplinary faculty, DME’s scholarship agendas include, among other areas, research in: clinical reasoning and decision making; the use of simulation for instruction and assessment; ethics issues in health care; the history of medicine; research methodologies; and areas in the foundations of education – curriculum development and renewal, instruction, assessment, and program evaluation. A major thrust, in our graduate education programs and in our work with the COM, is to use scholarship to achieve best practices in education leadership activities, and in turn, to use education leadership activities as a venue for generating and contributing to scholarship.
Service: DME has a number of divisions and programs that provide services for enhancing excellence in the COM, the UIC Health Sciences campus and external clients: the Graham Clinical Performance Center, the College of Medicine Testing Services; Faculty Development Programs; the Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE), the Distance Education Office (DEO); Humanities Programs; and the Essentials of Clinical Medicine (ECM) course, COM students' introduction to doctoring. All divisions and programs are described in more detail elsewhere on our website.
