Neuropsychology Fellowship

Description:

The Center for Stroke Research in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation offers a two-year Research and Clinical Neuropsychology fellowship to prepare post-doctoral Clinical Psychology students with the research and clinical skills necessary for successful practice. The fellowship follows the Houston Conference training guidelines. There is a training emphasis on the cognitive ramifications of stroke, vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), Alzheimer disease, and dementia of all types.

Objectives:

The neuropsychology fellow will have the following skill set upon graduation from the program:

  1. Research Skills. The fellow will show competence in research, including the design, implementation, evaluation and data analyses of research projects assigned to them. The fellow will also show competence in the reporting of research, both orally at conferences and in written form, through the preparation of research manuscripts. Finally, the fellow will show competence in the preparation of applications for external funding for research projects.
  2. Neuropsychological Assessment Skills. The fellow will show competence in all areas of neuropsychological assessment, including interviewing, test administration, test scoring, test interpretation, and both verbal and oral feedback to the patient, the patient's family and the referral source.
  3. Professional Conduct. The fellow will show knowledge and understanding of the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics in both research and clinical practice.

Requirements:

The program is designed to train recent doctoral level graduates of accredited clinical psychology programs who wish to complete specialized training in the area of neuropsychology. Prerequisites include:

  1. Completed PhD in an APA-accredited clinical psychology program;
  2. Completed predoctoral internship;
  3. Recognized interest in neuropsychology as shown by previous training experiences, coursework, research interests, and attendance at neuropsychology conferences;
  4. Recognized interest in the understanding and production of research as shown by presentation of original research; and
  5. Interest in the cognitive and functional ramifications of stroke and cerebrovascular disease
  6. A copy of the applicant's CV and 3 letters of recommendation
