CANCER CENTER SHARED RESOURCES
Cancer Center members have access to the services of four shared resources supported by the Cancer Center.

1Data Analysis and Methods Shared Resource (Biostatistics)
Craig Beam, PhD, Director

This shared resource is operated in partnership with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science.  These consultation services are available free of charge to Cancer Center members.
  • Study design development
  • Protocol review
  • Instrument and data collection design
  • Randomization and random sampling
  • Sample size determination and power analysis
  • Analysis and reporting

2. Biospecimen Shared Resource (Tissue Bank)
Andre K. Balla, MD, PhD Director

The Biospecimen Resource, in partnership with the Department of Pathology, collects and makes clinically annotated tissues and other biospecimens available to UIC Cancer Center members.
  • Fresh frozen tissues and cancer specimens
  • Paraffin embedded tissues for histological and molecular biology studies
  • Processing of blood for storage (DNA, plasma, viable cells for culture)
  • Consultation on research studies and grant applications that include tissue banking.

For more information, please contact (312) 996-2135.

3. Histology Services Shared Resource
Andre K. Balla, MD, PhD Director

Histology services in the Department of Pathology are offered to the entire campus at reduced rates through the Research Histology Services. UIC Cancer Center members receive even deeper discounts, subsidized by the Cancer Center.

Numerous services are offered, ranging from preparation of human and experimental animal tissues for histology, performance of special stains and immunohistochemistry stains, preparation of tissue microarrays, and laser capture microdissection offered in conjunction with the Research Resource Center.

For more information, please contact (312) 996-3869.

4. Protocol Review Committee (CC-PRC)
Dorothy Sholeen-Modrzyk, Staff Contact

The Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee, in cooperation with the UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research Office of Human Subjects Research, reviews all cancer-related protocols annually.  Fifteen individuals from multiple oncology and health care disciplines serve as members. This diverse composition assures a multidisciplinary approach to protocol review.

The CC-PRC review replaces the departmental review.

A comprehensive scientific review is conducted for all new protocols initiated by UIC investigators and for all industry sponsored protocols. New cancer clinical trial protocols supported by NIH mechanisms that have already undergone peer review are reviewed for feasibility and prioritization.

For more information, please contact Dorothy Sholeen-Modrzyk at dsmodrz@uic.edu

OTHER CAMPUS SHARED RESOURCES
A description of other campus facilities, including the Research Resource Center and the Biologic Research Laboratory, is available on this website:  University of Illinois at Chicago.

The Center for Structural Biology at UIC houses research instrumentation used for the study and characterization of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. For more information, please contact Dr. Benjamin Ramirez at bramirez@uic.edu or 312-996-5537.

The University of Illinois Tumor Registry, supported by the University of Illinois Medical Center, is approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.  Cancer Center members can request aggregate data on the incidence of cancers diagnosed and or treated, as well as cancer outcomes, dating back to 1974. More detailed information from 1995 to the present is available.  For more information, please contact Susan Simon, Director, at ssimon@uic.edu or 312-996-6912.
